Hi, I have a question: when you zoom the page and write, does the line of the pen look blurry and grainy? I tried an iPad pro in a store and when I wrote with the zoom, the writing looked really bad. Thank you

Does writing on the 11 inch model constantly require you to zoom in? The 12.9 inch is similar to an A4 sheet so I imagine that would be perfect size for note taking with the Apple le com even though it might not be portable enough. What are your thoughts ?

Vor Tag
Harris Craycraft
Harris Craycraft

It doesn’t have to require zooming in depending on how big you write and what thickness pen tool you use. I do end up zooming in a lot, but I am not forced to, per se.

Give them your physical iPad? Umm... just send an exported PDF

Vor 2 Tage

Well, then you have to export, email, and the other person has to pull out their phone/device and view it. I agree not the end of the world, but you’d certainly be “that kid” if you required someone to do that.

The music is not the worst "youtube music", but you really do not need to hide your speech underneath a carpet of unrelated noise... For me, as someone with English as a second language, it really - REALLY - makes it hard to understand and follow what you are saying, the music is making it almost too hard to have the endurance to get through the whole video. Skip the music, please. Take a look at PDF Expert and LiquidText! Both are very good even as note taking apps!

I am wondering about how comfortable it is to multi-task on this device. Im thinking of using this iPad for note-taking and at the same time for reading as i have most of my books digitally. Is it a nuisance to read a pdf while having notability at the side for note taking? Appreciate your reply and advice, thanks!

Great video! I’ve been using my 9.7 iPad Pro (2016) in college for note taking and it’s really helped me study better. I’m planning to upgrade to the new gen, but thought the 12.9 might be a better option because of the A4-like screen. Would you say the 11 inch is more than enough?

One of my concerns with the iPad is using Microsoft PowerPoint. I’m currently tempted to buy the previous generation iPad Pro to save some money and also invest in a cheap MacBook (maybe a 2015 model) that way I can type into the comments section of my lecture slideshow and then any revision I do I can hand write into the iPad. Would it maybe be do-able to combine the two on the iPad Pro? I’m not sure the keyboard add-on would be the best but it might be a worthy trade off to save money

I have the 10.5 in, not the new one. I cannot speak to the newly designed iPad or the newly designed Apple Pencil. I do, however, take a ton of notes on the iPad Pro and I even keep a journal on it. When it comes to assignments I turn it, I use notability; when it comes to my journal or notes, I use GoodNotes. My first journal entry on the iPad Pro took up 33 pages on GoodNotes and my hand was just fine. My journal entries nowadays tend to float around 5-6 pages on average and my hand never gets uncomfortable. In fact, I actually find the Apple Pencil more comfortable than a real pencil. Comparing my writing of journal entries or notes to my writing in green books for an exam, the writing in the exam is much more uncomfortable. I always end up with an aching hand in exams but I’ve never really had that with the iPad — not to the extent I always get in exams anyway.

Amir Hossein Hazareh IMSPRÅK A Tranemo gymnasieskola I’m a double major in English and Classics: Latin. For me, when I purchased the 10.5 in iPad Pro last year, it was absolutely worth it. My laptop ended up having an issue that makes it not so usable two months after I bought the iPad. I have not had to purchase another laptop though as the iPad does everything I need for school. You can type up documents with the smart keyboard, take notes with the apple pencil and your preferred note-taking app, put your textbooks on the device, use school sites like blackboard or canvas, etc. In truth this iPad has become my entire life. I do all my reading for school or otherwise on it, I keep my journal on it, I write stories which I submit to contests on it, etc. The only thing I don’t really use for in all honesty (and this is very ironic as this is many people’s main function for it) is as a video consumption device; for some reason, I tend to go for my phone when I want to watch Netflix or YouTube or whatever. For me, the iPad Pro was the best purchase I have ever made. That all being said, if you are in a precarious financial situation, I might recommend the iPad that just came out in March, not the Pro. It has Apple Pencil support and you can get a good bluetooth keyboard. That’s the iPad my parents just bought my brother for Christmas. It will do just about everything the Pro could do. I personally do not think I would have purchased it over the Pro if it had been out when I went to purchase an iPad, but it is a nice device still. If you wanted to get a Pro, I’d recommend the 10.5 in one even now simply because it’s cheaper because you’re a student and probably not swimming in extra cash. Not only is the device itself less money, but all the accessories are too. You’ll save a ton if you don’t go for this year’s model.

What are your thoughts/ preferences on not only note taking on the I pad pro but also getting text books on it as well?

Textbooks work well enough on here. More convenient than a large book, but not quite as satisfying as paper.

Hey Harris, How do you find using multitasking on the 11 inch? I'm looking to possibly replace my textbooks with PDFs, and notebooks with an app like notability. Is it ''comfortable'' to run a text book and notability side by side for note taking from the book?

Linx get the 12.9

I have the 10.5 in from last year which has a slightly smaller screen than the 11 obviously. Notability has a zoom writing feature thing which puts like a rectangle over a certain part of the page and lets you write in a zoomed in window which shifts as you write. To this end, using notability and a book app in split screen isn’t terrible. I have done it for my Latin class where I put the book I was translating on one part of the screen and Notability on the other, but I didn’t like it all that much. I had purchased a physical copy of the text we were translating, but it hadn’t arrived at that point. I do not use the PDF of the text now that I got the book because it’s much better to not have to do the split screen thing. It was uncomfortable for me to do it, but not too uncomfortable. I am considering, in future, not buying physical copies at all and just doing the split screen thing since it isn’t too painful. Anyway, just my take on it. The bigger issue for me with textbooks on the iPad is keeping track of them all. I’m double majoring in English and Latin and so I have a lot of pieces of literature to read on top of my textbooks. I get most of my English related books from Apple books. I also turn PDFs I get into Apple Book files. I get a lot of my classics related books (like the Aeneid or Livy’s histories) on the kindle app. And I get most, but not all, of my textbooks on google books. Apple books is the most friendly to use when reading as well as purchasing as with the other two you cannot buy a book in the app. The Kindle is the easiest to navigate. Google books offers the largest collection of books (especially textbooks) but is the worst app in bunch to use. Plus most of my textbooks on the Google Books app are behind an edition or two.

The 12.9” would be much more ideal for multitasking with a textbook, but the 11” still works. However, not all textbook apps will support split screen. You could try Safari if that’s the case.

Nice video Harris! I'm currently looking into upgrading to iPad Pro (from my iPad Air 2) and before watching this video, I was not sure whether I should spend extra cash on the latest iPad Pro 11" or save some and opt for the previous generation iPad Pro 10.5" (for $580 deal). But now that you've made the point that note-taking experience on the latest iPad Pro is one that you'd definitely recommend, I'm pretty much persuaded to invest more in the long-term (considering Apple's trend of ditching software support for older models). Just wondering though, what is the storage option of your iPad Pro 11"? Is the base model 64 GB enough? I'm mainly gonna be using it for note-taking, not "pro" stuff like video editing. And how much storage do notes in Goodnotes/Notability take up?

64GB should be plenty for your use, it sounds like. I bought the 256GB to be safe. I often still recommend the 10.5”, but if you’re looking long term, the 11 will be perfect.

Excellent review - I can see you having a great career in media if that’s your career choice. Anything is better than the huge folders and real paper I had to use at university !
