Lifetime iPhone user switches to Google Pixel 3... My thoughts

Luke Miani

I want to add some observations about Privacy because I find it very interesting! In the video I noted how I got notifications about 'Superstore', and how I saw the news article about 'Veep' hours after watching an episode. What is very interesting is when I watched both shows it was in Chrome on Windows. I watched an entire season of 'Wrecked' This summer on Safari inmacOS Mojave and I never saw a peep about it on the Pixel. This is hardly conclusive evidence, but it's certainly very interesting from an observational standpoint.

Privacy concerns against Google are more of a campaign for technology competitors and media competitors. Basically a myth like someone else mentioned. It is a jump from iPhone to Android to get suggestions.

You think AI is creepy? Eh. Your perspective sounds a little tinfoil hat-ish, but it's somewhat valid. Somewhat only because Apple collects just as much data but doesn't tell you. At least Google tries to relate it back to the consumer. Nice video.

What about WhatsApp messages? Does it get pulled over easily? One of the main problems with migrating between platforms is WhatsApp. The messages get sync to different cloud services up there - iCloud & Google Drive. It makes things so difficult without buying expensive s/w for making the transfers.

There is an "iMessage" like system on android now, RCS. Of course, apple and google will never make these services cross platform, so it depends what your friends use. You can log in and message from browser too tho.

I used the iOS platform for a long time, then I switched to Android and stayed there for a few years and now I am back to iphone. I had the note. 9 and there was a lot of things that bothered me that I won’t get into but I sold it and got the iPhone X S Max. I do miss some features of the note I have to say, but overall I am very very happy with apple. I hate that there is no headphone jack, totally hate that, but I have heard android are following and will soon all eliminate the headphone jack. So I have to accept it I guess. The performance and camera of the iphone is pretty perfect smooth, but I still do like Android. I would like to have both phones and just switch sims when I get restless for the other one, lol. But I can’t do that practically. I think both are decent phones and both have their pros and cons, it is a matter of personal preference as you said in this video. Thank you for posting and sharing your opinions. It is good to see what others appreciate and don’t appreciate from both sides. Merry Christmas!

I personally don't care either way, but the Pixel 3 has a particularly tall notch compared to iPhones, and some people take issue with the way Android handles them. I have the regular Pixel 3 so I can't comment on the claims, but that seems to be a common thread from what I've seen

Comparing by price is not accurate since Apple is clearly priced higher than any other device. Also, iMessage is slick but it separates group messages sent to Android friends - not very useful when half of the population uses Android.

I never used an iOS device but I can tell you that there is one thing I really hate about iMessages. That it is iOS only. That apple keeps it iOS only. Just forget about Android for a second. No third party company could use it. You lock everyone in. SMS and the new RCS is a open platform and Apple could use it as well. From what I heard it is not as powerful as iMessages, e.g. no encryption. The implementation is also not clear. I do not know how I could see if I use RCS or regular text.

If you really care about privacy, then you shouldn't ever be online. Do you really think Apple cares more about your privacy? They are more dishonest, of that I am sure. The Google tracking is a great thing. Turn it of if it really bothers you. I used Apple for years, and I won't go back. I even replaced my Mac with a Chromebook. Apple is overpriced, dishonest, and I don't want to ever give them any more of my money.

Hey Luke, Just so you know, you can scrub through text using the space key on the onscreen keyboard. Run your finger back and forth on it and it'll happen. And yeah, Google's "guesses" are spooky. They're the best at that machine learning stuff (having literally built tensor hardware, software APIs, etc.), with most other companies trying to catch up. Rest assured though, your privacy is between you and Google's computers, just like how it is on your iPhone - between you and Apple's computers. Google won't be giving up their position as gatekeeper - they won't be giving away or selling your info to anyone. They sell the service of targeting ads properly. I suspect you may have clicked past a privacy thing either on your computer or on the phone as you set it up. Google services periodically prompt me to accept a new agreement when I sign in, and I keep rejecting their requests. There is a privacy area on their website where you can control this stuff though, if you accidentally enabled it. The first thing I did when I got my Pixel was go in and disable all the tracking, GPS, random AI stuff, etc.; I just wanted that sweet point and shoot camera that could deal with very challenging lighting, and a stripped down no-bloat phone.

I've done the switch to a Pixel 3 XL and probably in retrospect I should have gone from the smaller 3. I don't have any issues with the notch but my fingers do find it a bit uncomfortable to hold and operate the fingerprint sensor. Android Pie seems a very capable operating system and I don't have any regrets. Part of my reason for switching was for me to do my little bit to explain to Apple that they have lost their customer centric approach which started with the loss of the magsafe connector and has got worse and worse.

To me, Apple just dictates on its customers what they want. I’ve using IPhone for 8 years and currently using IPhone SE. I don’t like big screens and always found 4 inch is better and more portable. If iPhone had upgraded 4 inch SE, I’d definitely switch to new 4 inch iPhone. However, Apple ignored its customers and forced us to buy bigger screen. I really don’t like the company’s policy. However, the biggest advantage of Apple is IOS. It’s so convenient to use. I still find that Android is more complicated than IOS. Pixel 3 looks good but it is still expensive. Both Apple and Google’s suppliers are mainly in The Far East, so why can’t they introduce us cheaper mobile phones?

Google's entire thing is using it's massive amount of data to make services more relevant to you (which of course, includes ads). You can opt out of basically everything if you want to, but then things like google assistant become about as dumb as siri, search data becomes less relevant, and features based on personalization basically don't work. Google has always been pretty upfront about what their services are about and how they do it. Yes it's a choice, but it's a tool to get a job done. And if you think Apple doesn't collect data on you, then you didn't read the Terms and Conditions that you have to agree to on basically every damn app and service Apple offers. Multiple times, constantly clicking agree. So many "accept" buttons, it drives a person mad. Yes, they really want you to know you're accepting T&C's, but does anyone read them? I don't even think lawyers read them unless it's for a case. Every technology company collects some kind of data from you, even when you opt out, you're only opting out of some optional data collection. There is still other data being collected that is simply part of the terms of using that product/service.

I would like to add that apple most definitely uses your information and logs everything. The difference is that Google doesn't pretend to hide their behavior. In fact, they use it to help you rather than secretly profit off of you. I'm not saying Google doesn't also profit on the backend with your data, but they're not afraid to dive in and let you know what they're tracking (even information you didn't think was possible to track). You can feel like big brother Android is watching you, but so was/is Apple. It's the world we live in and something you'll have to get used to unless you plan on ditching a connected life (which if you're like most people these days, this simply isn't an option you would consider).
