    ~~~
    Google had a lot to show us all on Tuesday, but nothing was more interesting to us than the Pixel Slate. Sure, we've known quite a bit about it, but there were some surprises in there that even we didn't know about.
One thing did not mention is that the actual RAM is ridiculously and I mean ridiculously low. Even Android phones come with 64GB or more of RAM and if you using it as a proper work machine you're not going to get by with just 16 GB of RAM trust me. So for that reason I think it's a non starter for a work machine which is a shame.
Meh. Still not the perfect Chrome OS device I was hoping for. They got the software right by now, from what I've seen the hardware looks decent, but every single device out there seems to be suffering from at least one major shortcoming that ruins it. Don't pull that Apple pricing shit with the type cover. Microsoft takes $99 or $129 for their surface type covers, and that's fucking expensive as it is. Also, no headphone jack? No SD card slot with only 64GB of internal storage (unless you want to pay at least $999 for a 128GB version)? Please don't make this a habit.
Wait and see to be sure, but it seems very likely that all the same software will run on the HP x2 as on the Slate, when or soon after the Slate is actually released. How is this device better than HP Chromebook X2? X2 starts at $599 with an m3 processor with a keyboard whereas the cheapest pixel slate is run by Celeron and two hundred dollars more expensive (starting price of $599 is really deceiving since you really need a keyboard for this one) I'm disappointed. Although I'm a big Chromebook fan, the surface pro is much more cost effective.
+Hongmin Ahn Maybe they tried, but an m3 in such a thin device might cause overheating. Its possible that a Celeron is enough for Chrome OS. If Slate runs chrome browser better than the surface go despite the modest processing power, that justifies the price. It is running on Chrome OS afterall (not windows). The only way to tell is by trying it out to see if it runs more smoothly in comparison. People complain about how Chrome browser runs terribly on the surface go and I stopped looking at it altogether. If you could somehow install Chrome OS on a surface go...😖
Really nice piece of hardware. I have a 7y old Dell Inspiron that I got updated in the last couple of years, it's moving decent with 8 gb of ram and a 240 gb ssd but when this will die it will be replaced most likely with a Chrome OS laptop, maybe a Google branded one. Google did a lot of work on this OS and to be honest for home use at least it could easily replace a Windows device, you got pretty much all you need. Microsoft needs to do something because this is catching speed, I wouldn't be surprised if Chrome OS will be considered a solution even for enterprise PCs with all being back-up in the cloud.
Iulian Moise Hi there, I been using Chrome OS for around seven years or maybe less, and little by little google Chrome OS has been around in the Education Industry’s , teachers and students in many institutions in the U.S use every day. I can tell you for sure that some industries will start using it in a near future. Especially for two important things IMO the type of Cloud back up google chrome have and the free Google suite docs, sheets and slides. for a half price that Microsoft Office is sell for consumers and enterprises. some Windows and Macs users (can’t mention Linux because I never used one honestly) are skeptical to use Chrome OS.... but I guess it does the job.... 🤝🤝
If you got everything (keyboard & pencil too) for like $1300 with the i7 & 16GB RAM it would sell... But does Google really care if it sells? $200 for a Keyboard...?!? Are they insane? Are we?
I like my Samsung Chromebook Pro for the money compared to the Pixel Slate / Book - the Samsung Chromebook Pro comes with a backlit keyboard, stylus and touchscreen. BTW - I gave up my Macbook Pro and iPad Pro when switching to the machine Apple will never make - while I've been an apple fan for years but finally gave up on their laptops and tablets. I still have an imac 27" 5k desktop, 6 appleTV's 4k, Apple Watch 4 cellular, and my iPhoneX. I also have Google Home (vs HomePod) and Samsung Pro Chromebook as my walkaround Laptop/tablet.
the x2 in the uk is being offered with 8GB RAM & 64 GB eMMC; too expensive at £799 though! Not keen on the flexible joint between the keyboard and screen on the Slate either; might not sit well in the lap.
@Aaron Porter Completely disagree. The X2 is good for a budget Chrometab/Chromebook convertible. _But_ it only comes in m3/4GB. The top-specced Pixel Slate has an 8th-gen i7 with 16 GB of RAM.
Despite "Oooooh! shiny design!" It seems like a worse value in every category compared to the X2. I'm disappointed.
i would say the slate is a DEVELOPMENT machine made avilable to the Public so it will be EXPENSIVE !! wait a year for the likes of Acer to make COMMERCIAL versions
Yes. Acer are about to release Spin 13 and Chromebook 14 refresh (514) which should offer much better value for money. Wish they would get on with it though!
You guys are really the only source i care about. Other tech news sources seem to still have the attitude and respective knowledge set of "it's just a browser" Sure, they'll throw in "it runs Linux and Android apps" but it's like their mindset is still in that "it can't compete with Windows/Mac/Linux" (despite the shortcomings of the software and hardware of the respective OSes) I'm really happy to see that you guys were able to make it out to the event.
John Wick Why don‘t you get an iPad? At the moment nobody can beat Apple in the tablet game. It has higher quality apps, a better thought through experience and the Apple Pencil is amazing if you want to hand write your notes or if your drawing. It‘s also much faster.
+Nadeem Shaikh Windows is a terrible OS for tablets. With ChromeOS you get the user friendly feel of android on mobile for the tablet and when docked you get the productivity gains like you would from Windows through ChromeOS apps and Android apps (G suite, Office, etc). So if you want a tablet that you can still use to get work done, then I think it's the Pixel Slate. Fits my use case and I'll probably pick up the i5 variant in a few months once the inevitable software issues are ironed out.
aaaand ChromeOS doesn’t have Photoshop, Final Cut, Visual Studio, Xcode, SQLdeveloper and on and on... Also, why need an i7 if ChromeOS is so fast?
I want this tablet but I am a little inclined to get the one with the M3 processor and 64gbs.
Or just get an x2, it has a headphone jack, an m3, and is $300 less if you want a keyboard and stylus.
Will watch this when I get home. My initial impression - better than the HP X2 but inferior to these high-quality convertibles coming out. Why no headphone jack and why the weird circular keys? I'm curious to see if this video changes my impression.
Great video. I've noticed from the videos about the Slate on YouTube that it seems to be a fingerprint magnet. A little disappointing for a premium flagship device.
