Google Pixel Slate Review: The 2-in-1 Microsoft and Apple wished they could make

I just got my slate today and I have to say I love it. I got the M3 version and the google keyboard. I haven't tried on my lap yet but in bed on a pillow absolutely no problems.

I love my surface pro but I want it to have a thinner bezel and louder speakers same as iPad Pro. Also, better app selection in the windows store. Its a mess at the moment.

I'm not a Windows fan, so I would reject Surface anyway. I can't even put a decent linux on it, because I couldn't find a tablet linux distro to fill my needs. And the new Ipad Pro is still without a filesystem to use as desktop pc and comes with the apple hook. Maybe Apple will go more Desktop like in the next generations. The google pixel slate is something worth looking into because it can run linux software and android thingys. So I'm interested.

These reviews keep going on about the lack of of a 3.5mm headphone jack - simply not a problem as Google ship the Slate with a short 3.5mm female to USB connector that you can plug into either side of the device. Also totally agree with points made about the screen and sound quality - both are brilliant, and of course you can cast 4k content to a 4k big screen UHDTV. No contest - buy the Slate!

For most reviews of this that I have seen so far, they have come guns loaded ready to shoot this to pieces, which is unfair and biased imo. This has been the best review so far, fair and honest. Thanks dude.

I just wish they had priced it lower. The current price points are excessive, though they did the same thing with Pixel 3 XL. They are pricing like they are Apple without the track record or the fan base. A shame.

As a laptop. Sucks as a tablet. Then theres iPad that is the best tablet, but sucks as laptop. Slate isn't the best at either mode, but it doesn't suck at either mode. Its good for people who want a balanced middle ground.

Honestly, im usually always against the removal of a headphone jack in most cases, but in this one specific case (being that the usb c adapts to a headphone jack, and that you still then have another usb c jack for charging or file transfers), it would really be that annoying to have the headphone jack removed entirely; since it's highly unlikely that you'll be doing anything that would require more than the two ports at once as it's meant to be a sort of mobile workstation/media device and not your MAIN set up for a computer.

I have a samsung chromebook pro and it can do most of the task i need. Yes you can't run heavy applications on it but it gives you the full desktop experience. I also have an iPad I don't use it much it just seems like a bigger version of an iPhone.

Way too expensive for a tablet with a browser, lags incredibly, mediocre app ecosystem not meant for tablets, been there and that with the mediocre pixel book. Nice hardware that’s about it and not worth buying. The iPad Pro smokes this thing in every way

Vor 20 Tage
Luis Burciaga
Luis Burciaga

Leonardo Santos I like the surface line as well because they're powerful machines, however they're more of laptops than tablets and I just needed a middle ground between the Surface and the iPad.

Vor 19 Tage
Luis Burciaga
Luis Burciaga

Leonardo Santos well I mean I didn't get the slate for its power but for it's portability. I take handwritten notes on my pixelbook and even though it was still thin and light it was still awkward using it as a tablet. The slate fixed that issue by being more of a tablet than a laptop. It fits my needs perfectly and I don't have to get sucked into the apple ecosystem which is good

Vor 19 Tage
Leonardo Santos
Leonardo Santos

Thing is, you buy a tablet for the app ecosystem mostly. If you need a better browser you just buy a laptop or surface pro. Chrome is just a browser and the apps will never be on par with iPads. It just does not make sense to spend so much money for a tablet that can run a pc browser you would be much better with a surface or a 12 inch laptop. But that’s just me, I would never pay $1000+ for a tablet with a browser OS and many people won’t either. Hence the pixel book which has been a flop

Vor 19 Tage
Luis Burciaga
Luis Burciaga

I have one and I can definitely say there's no lag. You're a little bit right about the app ecosystem, however apps are catching up quite quickly. It is much better than it was a month ago and is showing it will continue to do so. In the end it's all about preference really. The iPad Pro is really good too, and the Pixel Slate can do most of what the iPad does, and can do a few things the iPad (full browser instead of a mobile one, run a good amount of linux apps, better usb-c accessory support, and that's about it) I can definitely see why most like the iPad which I can't blame anyone for

I want to get one to replace my Pixel C but I don't need a full on replacement for a laptop. What would be the one that would best fit as a Pixel C upgrade that can compare to the Tegra X1? Also, does anyone know if Bluetooth has the hands free profile? It's annoying that the Pixel C doesn't because it can't make VoIP calls with a Bluetooth headset.

The title is stretching the truth just a little. Having a Desktop Browser, which the IPad Pro doesn't have and Mobile Apps, which the Surface Pro doesn't have, doesn't make the Pixel Skate a better experience than both. The Surface Pro offers a significantly better Desktop Experience and the iPad Pro a significantly better mobile experience. The Pixel Slate's mobile experience is unreliable and other than a browser it has no desktop experience.

Please PLEASE could you do a review about the pen on this device and an app called Nebo which is THE app to take notes? I can't find ANY review regarding taking notes on this device and it is mandatory for me as I'm taking lots and lots of notes (I'm using an iPad pro for this). I'm also very interested with the possibility to use Linux Apps as I'm also a linux user.

Vor 20 Tage
Max Khovansky
Max Khovansky

I don't have the Pixel Slate, but I do have the Pixelbook. Here is my review: Pen: I am using the Squid app, so I can't really comment on its performance on Nebo, but I'm assuming it will be similar. 90% of the time, it is basically perfect. Literally no lag, no drift, no parallax error, etc etc, literally feels like you are writing on paper. However, sometimes, about every 15 strokes, there is a massive lag, which lasts about one second. This is bizarrely fixed by scribbling around 20 short strokes. If you are using it in split-screen, though, that doesn't help, but this phenomenon is quite rare (about 1/4 times), anyway. Linux apps: Disappointment. Literally no programs come pre-loaded, so it becomes near-impossible to download any app. My dad is a software engineer, and even he is struggling. I've only installed two Linux apps so far, and they took me and my dad a total of 14 hours to download. So if you are to get one of those devices, you better make sure you know how download the apps you want. However, I must say Linux apps will only get better with future updates.

+Steven Hiller Thank you, I know perfectly well what I can do with a surface. We have surfaces at work. I bought several surfaces to my colleagues... And we are not happy. The battery life is awful except when you use Edge and only Microsoft default app (Which is obviously absolutely not what we want), there are regular bugs, the pen is laggy if used too long... It is not a tablet. It is a laptop with a very poor tablet experience. I've had an iPad pro during almost 3 years, and it is a true tablet with a lot of quality apps... But as a laptop, it is also awful, with no mouse support and poor productivity. My laptop uses Mint and I'm fully happy with it. I just want a good tablet to take notes like I've done the last 3 years with the iPad pro with the possibility time to time to have a real chrome desktop and linux apps.

Thanks for your wonderfully worded review. I really hope you can help me make a choice. Except for my Note 9, I don't need to take any device outside the house. I own a Surface Studio desktop with Windows 10. Tablet wise I have the original ipad pro 12.9". I can eliminate the Surface laptop, as I don't need another windows device. I really don't know what The Chrome OS is and what it might bring to the table that I'm not aware of. So I'm not sure whether to upgrade my tablet to the new ipad, (Not a big Apple fan), or whether the Slate might be a fun new option. Any thoughts/information you could provide, would be greatly appreciated. Arthur

Arthur Reilly if you’re looking for a tablet don’t get slate and if you’re looking for a desktop-like device get the slate. It’s basically just a browser. That’s it nothing else. I personally think you should get an iPad as you have your surface studio for the desktop experience.
