Google Pixel Slate Review: Chrome OS still needs a keyboard

Obviously the Pixel Slate has its work cut out for it. But on the surface, it's some of the most impressive hardware Google has built. And from a pure specs perspective, the Slate should be able to keep up with the iPad Pro and Surface Pro, no problem.

Being a non native speaker I found it difficult to understand every phrase. So I went back and forth through the review, not looking at the screen for a better focus. Still missed a few words. But this review seems tot be fine, more objective than others and not too much in detail, which I as an average user do not appreciate. Thank you, very useful, I will go for the Pixelbook!

I think the problem is tech writers are living in this bubble where they honestly think people are buying iPads to do productivity and cant wrap their heads around the fact that people who are using iPads are watching HBO, Netflix, web browsing , reading books, playing games etc. Something both the Pixel Slate and the Surface Pro can do just as well. And when it comes to productivity in laptop mode both the Pixel Slate and Surface perform better, they aren't constrained, they have trackpads, , printing is easier. , they have full fledged desktop versions. It pains them to have to point that out so they don't. They convince themselves that people use tablets for serious productivity and beyond and tiny percentage of people, that just isn't reality.

Great, honest review. Elaborating on the fragmentation/confusion of Android app vs webapp and which is better: Netflix and VUDU. Netflix Android app only lets me stream what appears to be SD or 720p at best, but can download (it says) High quality; playing it back, it looks 720p or SD. Same with VUDU, but it straight up tells you SD only for streaming or downloading. With Web Apps (dot com sites), with Netflix you click "Allow" to determine playback content, and it streams 1080p perfectly fine. With Vudu, you "BLOCK" to detrmine playback content and THEN it can play back HDX after a second just fine. I found making a PWA ("Create shortcut" in the "More Tools" section of browser settings, and right clicking to open as a new Window) gives me the best overall feel, besides downloading for offline. Big pain, but for STREAMING, I would still take this over Microsoft Windows 10 since ChromeOS is so simple and snappy. Just waiting to see what is a good upgrade from my Asus C302 and having tried for minutes or bought and returned some devices like the Pixelbook, Acer Chromebook SPin 13, I'm still waiting. If all else fails, if the Pixelbook hits $699 or less again for Christmas, I'll just bite on that if the Slate doesn't impress me when I can get hands on it.

Go get an IPad Pro and send Google to hell for their flimsy approach to hardware

It does not. But no you aren't right that Chrome OS needs the internet to work. It's pretty capable offline. Anyway Google has pointed out that their data shows most people just tether for data on laptops, etc. so they didn't bother with LTE. A lot of people find it more handy but in the actual marketplace it's more just a niche really. I can see their point. I doubt too many people shelling out for the LTE versions of ipads aren't also carrying a smartphone. If tethering is seamless enough then LTE isn't really needed.

This looks to have similar software issues to Windows 10 as a tablet. It's not optimised enough. I'd still prefer a Pixel Slate than Pixel Book because being able to get rid of the keyboard and use it as a tablet is still a nice thing to do on my surface pro.

Roberto Mezquia Jr That’s good to hear! Yeah it might’ve just been the video, admittedly I’ve never used this device so I’ll concede that. But Surface devices are pretty bad in the pen department. My SurfaceBook just didn’t feel as pleasant to draw on as I wanted it to. The fact that the panel sort of pushed inward when I used it and made weird visual things happen didn’t help either.

one thing no one address in these battles between tablet os's. Windows Surface is a full fledged OS and it is cheaper than the ipad and the slate. yes, it's not as good in tablet mode as either of the others but it is still quite serviceable as a tablet. So really if you want full desktop functionality and a decent tablet then get the Surface. A lot of artists really like the surface as well.

+Bill Dineen As far as the lack in productivity, Chrome OS just seems to need more software; The peripheral support is already there and the OS can certainly support the sorts of functions necessary for productivity software. And there are definitely times I convert my Pixelbook back into desktop mode in order to perform certain tasks, some of which don't even involve typing.

Regis Bodnar the pixelbook is a very good choice. I have mine for about a year now and in terms of the keyboard itself, the pixel slate is batter. But you already know about how it is on your lap. It's so funny. I almost never have any issues with most of the android apps. ms word and excel work great. and all my streaming services, netflix , amazon, Hulu and you tube all work great. I can make them all into window sized apps in desktop mode and though I almost never use it, the split screen works great. I really like tablet mode and often use my pixelbook in tablet mode on my lap. I do know that android apps aren't perfect yet but most of the common apps developers have stepped up and made them work well. and like another commenter pointed below, with regular updated chromeos gets better and better. the experience on my pixelbook is better now than it was a year ago. that is one of the best things about chromeos.

The review seems rushed and by someone that had about 4h experience on the device. One big missed selling point for example: Linux offers a whole new desktop experience not only for developers and is not compliacted to run. Once you install the Gnome Software Market (one single line command), you will have a one-click software market that provides you full desktop apps and is as easy to use as Google Play, Windows Store or iStore. Another big selling point for me is the ability to connect to an external monitor, mouse and keyboard and have a full blown desktop experience (iPad can do that? no)

Reviewers are way too lenient on the slate. Engadget calls it a "tough sell", which is too polite a term for something that is a buggy mess with a terrible and sometimes unusable keyboard. Who buys the slate anyways? Chromebooks are marketed as cheap notebooks for people who don't need a full desktop. Who would buy this besides hard core chrome super users? With less money, you can buy a surface pro 6 and get better specs, and if you're a super user, you can easily install chrome on it.

Vor 18 Tage
Luis Burciaga
Luis Burciaga

sin331 I got one and I haven't encountered any bugs so far. The keyboard is really nice and when it comes to using it on your lap it isn't nearly as bad as people have been giving it. I've been trying to use it in different positions, I haven't found it unusable or uncomfortable. Still think they should've designed it the way the surface does though. The slate serves as a Halo device. Google knows it isn't going to sell very well, the same way they knew the pixelbook wasn't either but it provides an example of what the market should be going for, for instance they're pushing for manufacturers to make more Chrome OS tablets. For me at least I find it as a good middle ground between the surface and the iPad. iPads are more tablets than they are a laptop, and the surface is more of laptop than it is a tablet. And yeah I can see with what your saying with making a surface run chrome os but Chrome OS works better with it's intent hardware. A good Chrome OS tablet that's also a lot cheaper is the HP X2

You should be embarrassed for parroting that ridiculously exaggerated accusation that "apps on Android tablets are not optimized." I can always....without exception....predict that this is where you / all of you using this argument will refer to Instagram. The very fact that you can ONLY EVER cite Instagram and Snapchat as examples shows how wildly overblown this argument is. The fact is, almost everything that people TYPICALLY buy a tablet for does have optimized Android apps.

I think, as somebody else also commented, that most reviewers haven't mentioned Linux because it isn't in the stable channel yet. That is fair I suppose. But also a little short sighted for a pro reviewer to not even mention it. I mean - it will be in the stable channel very quickly. Still - it's a work in progress. I'm not sure they have stuff like graphics acceleration and sound fully worked out yet. In any event, Linux being on board is definitely part of my calculus here.

The thing that I think is missing from most of the reviews is how the device will age. They make tiny changes to Chrome OS every 6 weeks or so, but taken over the course of a year or so really do solidify the vision. Ask a Pixelbook user. Or go back a year and ask a Samsung Chromebook Plus/ Pro user. The difference is night and day, and for the better across the board. The same can't always be said about most software.

Vor 18 Tage
TankQ

that's what I said about modern devices, it's no longer a review of the product and the product continue to live out its life the same way. Like Pixel 2 getting night sight and call screening, already more useful than it was first reviewed. Another extreme example, iPhone 6 which shipped with iOS8, before there was even password autofill, security code autofill and handoff to laptop, instant hotspot handoff, wifi password handoff to friends, qr code reader in the camera app, document scanner in notes, apps offloading, keyboard cursor, night shift, screen time, keyword tokenisation, and even APFS too. It didn't get ARkit and HEIF or H.265 of course but that's hardware limited, otherwise compared to the original review of iPhone 6 with iOS 8, completely different phone.

My Chromebook is better and more fully capable than when I bought it. Updates are frequent and the increase in functionality has been a steady theme. I expect the future to be more of the same. The single hardware complaint I've seen about this thing is about the folio keyboard being too floppy to be good on a lap. I don't care about that personally. For people that do I also expect Zagg and Logitech will be along to the party shortly enough if the Brydge keyboard doesn't do it for them.
