With regard to the timers I noticed you gave it the three timers in descending time order. If you give it the times for multiple timers will it rank them intelligently on its own such that the shortest timers are at the beginning of the list? If so then the need to scroll is kind of mitigated because you know none of the timers off screen are up yet. Also can you designate a default external chromecast to send audio to as you can with the regular Google Home and Home Mini? I'm thinking a sound bar on the wall in the kitchen with a Chromecast Audio attached (or built in) would be nice for music. I don't really care too much about Netflix as I think the screen is too small to comfortably watch much video anyway.

I use SmartThings for my lighting and other things that I integrate with both Google Home and Amazon Echo. I use a Fire7 tablet on my wall running ActionTiles in a full screen browser called Fully Browser. It pretty much works the same way using alexa on the tablet. Have you ever thought about doing a home automation series. you could do multiple videos with all the things that can integrate with a Smart hub.

So far I have loved my google home hubs, I got one for the kitchen and one for the master bedroom. Back to the voiceprint, I was surprised that I was not able to unlock my smart locks with my voice. I am able to lock them, but not unlock them. Even with my ‘voice print’. I believe my same smart locks can be unlocked with Siri (just not google or Alexa) Even though Siri doesn’t have ‘voiceprint’ Thinking about this more, I am happy about it. People with a voice recording, people shouting into my house from the outside, and other means of getting the locks to unlock could be a security issue. As we dive more into smart homes and tech, I continue to be surprised at how these companies are controlling certain accessibility. There doesn’t seem to be one silver bullet. Great review, thanks!

I whisper into my Apple Watch 4 to my HomeKit-connected Yale Assure SL lock, and it unlocks the door for me. Unfortunately, raising my watch to activate Siri only works sometimes, and even less, does Siri respond by saying "ok." Mostly, it says it cannot do it, but then does it anyway! It's rather buggy, you could say.

Alexa will lock my Schlage lock by command only, but requires a spoken pin number to unlock. I like that solution, the only drawback being you can use it only when you are free to say the pin number without being overheard by someone other than those you trust.

Vor 12 Tage

Interesting that it'll lock but not unlock, that makes sense given how easily fooled it is with a recording. In fact it's not even the whole command that triggers the voice print match but just the "Hey Google" - the rest can be in another person's voice. On Apple's platform the phone requires a FaceID or touch ID to execute door lock home kit commands. But the Apple Watch can do it if it's unlocked and on the wrist. It's actually pretty cool to raise my wrist and request the door be unlocked. It's like magic!

No camera is a big miss. One of the best uses for these sorts of devices is video calling through Skype or whatever. Strange decision from Google really....

+drphibesrises yeah exactly, it could have been a simple fix. Lenovo easily added a physical shutter for the camera on their smart display which is why I'd feel comfortable using it in my bedroom

Vor 7 Stunden
drphibesrises
drphibesrises

I agree, but I read they didn't put a camera since they expect people to use these in their bedrooms and were concerned about privacy issues. Still I think they should have put one with a physical way to cover it with an indicator light to know it is on and give the user a choice, but still allow at a quick glance to determine if the camera is on. It could be that they were just to cheap to put it in. 🤪

Yet they allowed it on their Google Assistant-powered smart displays. I use the video call function very frequently on my lenovo smart display.

Hi Lon- Love the show, I have a question and you are the only guy I trust with the answer. I was watching your review of the WD PR2100 and plex server, so I purchased one( received yesterday). Ive worked with WD tech support and they dont know how to fix this issue. I use Kodi on a Nvidia Shield and I wanted to link kodi's powerful abilities and versatility to the Pr2100 (my plex server and where my data base is located). Here in-lies the problem, it seems the pr2100 OS or file system does not match up well with Kodi and I was hoping you could determine if it is possible to get these two products working together. I can get the kodi to see the data base but it will not recognize the shares ( movies, Tv shows...), it will just bundle everything together. Also, the ability to use IBDM to recognize the content and add the correct graphic and movie title is lost as well. Can you help or is this not in your "wheel House"?

Vor 13 Tage
PDS

+Lon.TV I think your right, however, the file systems seem to be very limited from a compatibility stand point and important functionality seems to be missing. I would like to be able to use the Ibdm(identifies movies, TV shows and music) to tag content. I did watch your kodi, plex, nas shows, but I have done what your demonstrated, but that method doesn't use the IBDM functionality either. Have you every heard of freenas ? If so, do you know of its file system can run on a pr2100, and is the file.system more compatible with Kodi. I know your busy Lon, with production of your show(take alot of behind the scenes work), but I do appreciate your help. I'm not a super tech guy, but if you can direct me in a certain direction, I'll try my best to figure it out. Happy Holidays!

Hmm I'm not sure what you're looking to do - I am pretty sure most of what you describe is handled on the client and not the server in Kodi?

Have one in the kitchen and the best thing is you can do is "cast" video/music from Plex to it. Now I can keep watching my movie while I cook. I too couldn't get live TV to play from Plex. Even tried recording a show and cast it while it was recording, no luck. Once the recording is finished, no problem. I hope Plex will fix/allow live TV in the future. Recording a sporting event for latter viewing isn't ideal.

pretty cool. was looking for something like this so i can put the time and calendar. Would of been amazing if they added a camera so it can be a security camera also. with the censer it could activate the camera.

The reason I didn't get one for myself was for that very reason of not being able to install android apps. I just thought it was too limited a device. I thought the Amazon Fire HD 8 with the optional charging show dock was a better deal at $79. It's not Google Assistant, but it isn't limited like the Google Hub is. You can install anything, including Netflix, HDHomeRun App, Plex etc on it The one thing I would like to see for these smart displays is an under the cabinet mount so it doesn't take valuable kitchen counter space. I don't know about you, but I cannot have enough counter space when I am cooking. With appliances like the blender, coffee maker, cutting board etc. If it was just underneath the kitchen cabinets, it would be the perfect kitchen companion and not competing with my other appliances.
