I have a pixelbook and I was kinda disappointed at first. Using the hack to get linux alongside sucked as well. But recently, google released an update that allows you to install linux app in a builtin linux vm. So now instead of performing the hack all you have to do is basically enable the linux vm on the settings. It still in beta but I was able to install vscode and it works pretty good and it runs like a linux app. so far it scales pretty well. So I believe that yes the price still pretty high for a computer like this but at least now you can do development stuff without hacking the way through it. it would be good if you could make an updated video an let us know what you think about the progress google is trying to make with this computer. Thanks

The regular elephant in the room is that these hipster top-end devices are totally unnecessary for the 70-80% of people who simply wish to check e-mails and watch silly cat videos on Youtube. Most would have no problem running windows 10 on a refurbished laptop from 2008.

I use VMware to get into my work Windows machine and also Chrome's excellent free Remote Desktop to get into my Mac at home to type iMessages with my keyboard etc and any other specific app to run as well on the side. So, this "web browser" is essentially running THREE different computers for me. My host super fast chrome machine, the MAC and my work WINDOWS. Also many Android apps for my twitter, sports, voicemail, movie timings and on and on. So, yeah, specs are important. As well as a great keyboard and screen and trackpad. Lightweight, sexy, long battery life. Annnnd...it is available for $699 currently in stock at Google/Best Buy etc... so now what about that high price point? The fools who think just one dimensionally are not as savvy as they think.

+Legit Content Perhaps but, ChromeOS can do a LOT if you dig into it (Linux etc.). The Pixelbook may be a little excessive, but a $300 laptop vs a $300 chromebook, the chromebook always wins in performance. That laptop is going to be a slug. I like Windows, but chromebooks are becoming kick ass.

I got my PixelBook at Best Buy for $675 about six months ago. Don't get the $1200 version. I loved my PixelBook so much I threw out my work desktop and replaced it with a $200 chromebox. Both have a blazing fast browser experience and integrate very well with my G Suite environment. That being said Chrome OS works just about exactly the same on my cheapo chromebox as it does on my pricey PixelBook. Unless I am running some heavy Linux apps like PHP Storm I never even notice the difference. One last thing, the amount of free software (Linux/Android) I can run on these machines is amazing and Android app support seems to be getting better every day. Paying over $1000 for a Chromebook is certainly a personal choice and not necessary if you want a great working machine with little or no support required.

The $200 Acer chromebook is the perfect specline for a Chrome OS machine. It maximizes everything a Chromebook can handle other than a touchscreen. Anything else is a joke and you would be better off with a Windows laptop. The point of a chromebook was budget laptop for students, and that's exactly what the Acer chromebook is, not the price of a Windows or even Mac machine which is objectively better.

Linus, you can't really complain about linux in that context. The problem lies in the fact that there's a LOT of distributions, each good for different needs. The scaling thing is not linux but the desktop environment that came with the distro, and is somewhat equivalent to complaining about the color of a car, when you could just have chosen another color! If the scaling is a problem I would suggest using Pantheon desktop environment. -even though it resembles mac :p

I've always argued that Google made a terrible, terrible decision not to fork an existing mature Linux distro (like Manjaro, Mint, or Ubuntu) and use it as downstream tech for ChromeOS. Like, there's no goddamn reason why they should have tried to reinvent the wheel here, and their attempts honestly suck. It was silly when they did it with Android (but at least there's a justification), but it was downright idiotic with ChromeOS. They're never been able to make Chrome book give them a leg into the laptop market because the OS is a totally half-baked concept. ChromeOS appears to be modeled on the failed Unity/tablet project in Ubuntu and the failed Windows 8 tablet OS. Like, this is a terrible idea, and what's worse is it was known to be a bad idea before they started it. If you want to make a laptop OS, then make a fucking laptop OS. A browser is not a fucking operating system. They could have paid good money to the Debian to make them a suitable ARM-core version of Debian, and then have worked from that. Or they could have kept ChromeOS being totally free and worked entirely within an existing OS that would allow them to ship Chromebooks with, say, a tweaked Linux Mint with a pre-installed, dedicated Chrome store that extends the Software Center, and then maybe they could have dumped their remaining R&D budget into an actual ARM-core emulator for their x86 premium laptops. It's not like they couldn't have worked with the open source community to get them on board, it's not like those groups don't need the money. But instead Google is just fucking off doing useless shit that only 1% of the market will ever notice, if that. But if they had worked with one of the open source Linux communities... They might actually have a fucking usable OS and a 2-in-1 laptop worth selling. And it might even have opened them up to desktop OS markets. But instead they spend at least hundreds of millions on a questionable product.

I'd say for what it's worth, Chromebooks can be powerful. You just need to know how to use them right! The Pixelbook was just not ready but it is full of potential! I was thinking of getting the Pixel book but got an HP Chromebook 14 instead which has 4 GB of RAM and a Celeron. It seems to run Android apps way better than the Pixel Book somehow even without a touchscreen (probably because it's only 1080p) and also runs Linux actually well. I did a simple BIOS mod and can now load proper Linux straight from my 128 GB SD card. So if you need a cheap laptop get a 3rd party Chromebook. And at least these have SD card ports too so you don't have to wipe the system drive to fully install Linux, and you also don't need to waste system space to store Crouton (what he was using but with a crappy desktop.)

My recommendation would be to use developer mode to boot from a USB device. From there you could install windows 10 but you will have to use an external mouse and keyboard, and then install drivers which you can find pretty easily, that way you can make use of a 1000$ mobile browser that doesn’t require an internet connection to even work.

If you do anything above surfing web, netflix (w/ or wo/ chill), and limited Google Spreadsheets, run a way. I bought into some linux functions are available yes if you put 2-3 days of work and accept by any update you might need to recover and lose all your work.
