With Samsung having its desktop UI DeX on the market for over a year now, the introduction of the Galaxy Tab S4 has brought new questions to the table; mainly causing users to wonder whether or not DEX on a tablet is like a Chromebook.
We don't think so, and we think Chrome OS is the better platform all around, and we want to show you why.

chromebooks  chrome os  samsung  dex  galaxy note 9  galaxy tab s4  tablets

So i am able to do all the things you mentioned on dex itself, the only thing you cannot do on dex itself is have the ide for development, but I was able to install phpstorm and others on linux on dex and you can have inspect element there too. and if you boil down to it, you can pretty much compile or get there anything you want, but as for example opening docs in chrome itself, it is easy, not sure where you got the problem

For ChromeOS to be a good productivity OS, it should have good audio performance as well. There is a reason why I am using an iPad to sketch audio ideas or use it as a virtual studio synth - it is just so much more optimized. Synthesizers on ChromeOS are basically just shitty browser games and Android has horrible latency. Time to fix that!

I sat here and read through the comments on this video and yeah the chromebook is cool, but it felt like you were scared to admit that the dex could be much much more later down the line. This new capability with Samsung is still fairley new. Give it some time and itll only get bettwr with more support. Loves the commwnt on how you didnt want to bash dex but then clearly did all while not mentioning a lot of the things dex is good forwith its app launching situation.

Neither is really an adequate desktop except for very pedestrian use cases. Best to just install Debian or some other real OS. DeX is useful for when you want to enter a bunch of stuff into your phone with a real monitor and keyboard. But I'm sure not gonna use it for my office computer all day long.

Sounds like Dex and Chrome OS are both in infancy and will continue to grow into great OS. Sounds like it really depends if you want a tablet that can handle some work tasks when you need it to, like a student maybe, or a more PC set up for primary work and when that's done quickly and easily move into your entertainment/tablet side of things. 2 in 1s or convertibles never grabbed me because I felt they were too far from being a tablet. I'm really in a hard decision over the galaxy tab S4 and the new pixel slate. I think they are both exceptional devices and have really found that happy middle between a laptop and a true tablet. Nice review and explanation btw

I don't know....it always seems to me that this guy's videos always praise ChromeOS.....Chromebooks.....Google...etc. I'll pass on Chromebooks though.....not enough horsepower under the hood....and terrible on storage. I know it supposed to be a web-based OS where you are supposed to store your data in the cloud, but with the amount of data breaches that have happened lately?....I prefer to save my data on my 4TB external USB's and not some computer,.....out in the ether......that's no where near as secure and safe as my drives are.

Chrome OS is Chrome Browser stretched over a desktop interface. The introduction of android apps was botched hard for the same reasons you complain about DeX being hit or miss. Most Android apps on Chrome OS are terrible. Absolutely garbage and embarrassing considering the close ecosystem between the two. Chrome OS works great for Docs , basic media consumption and social media which is right around the capabilities of Dex which in my opinion Kills Chrome OS simply due to the pocket sized convenience of always being able to have it with you. I'm a huge google fanboy and believe it or not typically detest Samsung phones due to the pricing, Experience UI, and up until the S8, eventual performance issues so it's weird for me to come here and defend them over a company that makes products I actually want. -Samsung gets monthly security updates -Browser has their own extensions -Calendar syncs with Google You've got to consider that like it or not, Samsung is, has always been and likely always will be more feature packed than google. Everything from the OS, to the apps , to the tech built inside the phones (not saying google isn't innovative but Samsung likes to push) If you use Dex as a Samsung user, you'd likely already be familiar with their extensions and calendar and just like how Google wants you to keep it google, Samsung works best when you keep it samsung Unless pixel devices get the option to run a Chrome based launcher or something on to a second screen, the 1 device solution from Samsung is killing it. Keep Chromebooks for schools and libraries though, cheap and all you need for that. A great example of chrome OS proving more reliable than the android desktop alternatives would be Huawei's desktop mode feature. Even I'd rather dish out the cash to carry around a large clunky device with a keyboard to avoid using Huawei desktop mode

Im a note 9 guy but honestly yeah.Chrome Os is better at doing things via destop since Dex still is an incomplete sistem that still needs more features to make it productive. But then again it all depends on what phone u want since Dex and CoS is just a feature and ur not gonna spend money for just one feature that can be easily used on a cheap pc while also risk buying a phone u don't like.

I agree that for baic productivity, as in for a home user, a Chromebook is likely a fantastic idea. But that is not what DEX made for. Its made for someone who may travel a great deal that has no desire to drag along an oversized tablet or even a Laptop. You can plug a DEXDock (S8, S9, Note 8) or with a note 9 directly into any display with an HDMI input, have a bluetooth mouse and keyboard paired, and get right to work with most of the apps that are DEX compatable. Additionally, Chromebook was not as versatile when it started out, it was, as many have called it, a Browser Operating system. Now, Chromebooks are VERY capable machines, as I expect Dex will become with time. One MAJOR thing I have had issue withe on Chromebooks though is I have yet to use one that my Android Phone will connect to, as in, when I plug it into the Chromebooks USBport, it does not see it. Maybe I am missing a driver, but that I dont really worry about at this point because I am not planning on buying another one again. With DEX, once connected to a monitor with keyboard and mouse, I am using the phones computing power, which is pretty dang good, and I have no need to tether by cable or wifi to it for data, and all items on my memory are accessable. It is going to come down more to preference of the individual, not as much as which is better. Give DEX time to eveolve as Chromebooks have and you might be surprised.

I recently had a windows 10 laptop suffer a brutal death at the hands of there latest update. That alone made me explore my options. ChromeOS is the future and people need to get on board. I notice linux (beta) is available but I have no idea on how to use it so I won't activate it. I am glad also that I waited to check out chromeOS. I wanted to see how it matured before diving into it.

Chrome OS hasn't lived up to the hype we heard at the beginning of 2018. It still doesn't do a good job with android apps and many android apps just are not designed to go with a 10" or larger screen. iOS and Windows 10 both handle desktop apps better. iOS is limited by no mouse support. Chrome OS is fine with Chrome OS specific apps and if/when it gets Linux working well and smoothly it will be good but as of October 2018 Windows 10 does a better job with a keyboard & pointing device and as a tablet Windows 10 works fine. So far Windows 10 is a better choice than Chrome OS.

I just got a note 9, and am looking at which adapter to get for DeX. Some people say DeX limits the resolution to 720 and only allows 5 apps at once if a 3rd party adapter is used. I know the official DeX adapters range from 50 to 80, but if I can find a USB C to HDMI for half that, might as well save a few dollars. But if the limitations are true, I'd rather pay more to have the full DeX experience. Has anyone experienced this limitation with 3rd party adapters?

It boils down to whether or not the tools are available and effective for the platform you're working with when you do "work". For my work environment we use a hosted desktop and the Dex environment will run the viewer without a problem. If someone's work environment relies on locally installed software then of course you're subject to the availability and reliability of those apps in whatever environment you choose.

I tavel from location to location for work so when I need to sit down and use Excel, Google Sheets, PowerPoint, etc to switch to Dex mode. It works great. Simple. You are a computer programmer/architect, or need heavy processing? Go desktop But I work from my PHONE Galaxy S7, using a water resistant bluetooth keyboard, going throughout contracts, or spreadsheets I have to custom build up for project management, emails, browsing, watch YouTube, movies, etc, etc. Because quite honestly I hate to work with PCs too much freaking maintenance, defrag here, there, so and so. I abandoned that platform more than 5 yrs ago. All in all I have a COMPUTER in my pocket. Now I will move to get a Note 9, connect a simple cable and use DEX, and presto that is as much as I need. Maybe it will apply to millions that use a desktop that could get rid of unnecessary expenses and clutter, etc + benefits. In the End it ALL depends on what you REALLY DOWN TO EARTH NEED. My 2 cents there !!!!

I paid heavily into the Android ecosystem and I've given the Chromebook plus gen 1 and HP Envy X2 a go, Chromebook Plus was really good at running android apps but didn't support SNote (though they've destroyed Snote and Samsung Note is also just as bad, Note Pro version of S Note is the best), Anyways, even though the Envy was a better specced machine, it ran android apps terribly. Dex plus Tab S4 = winner. I just can't justify Chromebook. Most of the Chromebook apps are web based trash and not fleshed out enough and it's hard to tell which one will open up in a browser and which one is a proper standalone app where with Android you don't get any of that, and you can root it for more use, where "rooting" Chrome OS is cumbersome and leaves you needing to learn Linux syntax, which I don't want to. Rooted Android is very civilian friendly.

Your single solitary objection to Dex is you don't like the Chrome browser. Wouldn't it be incumbent on you to test all the browsers? Rejecting a whole device on the basis of one app without considering alternatives is stupid. As for pixel slate, why should I take a device seriously that can't decide whether it is Chrome or Android? Why should I take Google's strategy seriously when they can't extend it to phones? Why do I want a different phone experience to my tablet?

If you're looking for a tablet for light productivity, a light Windows tablet is better. DEX is something different completely. We can assume that people have smartphones whether they have tablets, or PCs or not. So you could have DEX automatically if you have a Samsung phone. And DEX is in your pocket so it goes wherever you go. But if you're going to go ahead and buy a tablet, then neither Android, nor ChromeOS devices make much sense other than that they might be cheaper than the thin and light Windows tablet. Chrome OS is cut down 'productivity' experience, and Chromebooks aren't even cheap!

Vor 2 Monate
Bad Decisions

Ultimately it's a really bad comparison. Everyone needs a phone, the Dex makes that phone into a basic workstation by plugging it into what is essentially a charger, add a mini wireless keyboard+trackpad and your good to go, a setup that can easily fit in a coat or bag pocket. Works with tv, monitors and projectors and may save you if your laptops dies. Correct, it's not a laptop killer, it's adding another reason to buy a Samsung phone to professionals who want more out of their business devices. Chrome OS may well be a fine enough inferior windows but a tablet is another device to take with you, if your carrying around a tablet you can take a slim laptop so why gimp yourself at that point? Again It's just not a laptop killer, few businesses use tablets and i don't think chrome OS will convince many to not just carry on with laptops. I guess what I'm getting at is one is a useful addition to a device you may already be (or thinking about) using and ones a dedicated device. Ones trying to make a phone more useful and the others trying to be a more functional tablet, only one of those devices do you really need when you have a work laptop.
